These toxins are commonly found in San Diego tap water

Chlorine

When chlorine reacts with organic and inorganic matter in water, it can form disinfection byproducts (DBPs), such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). Prolonged exposure to high levels of certain DBPs may pose health risks.

Fluoride

High levels of fluoride exposure, common in groundwater around the world, can result in debilitating dental and skeletal fluorosis. 

Arsenic

Arsenic is a known carcinogen, and long-term exposures to low-levels of arsenic concentrations in drinking water are associated with an increased risk for several types of cancers.

Lead

While lead is now a regulated substance, it was widely used in the past in many household products, including gasoline, paint, pipes, and plumbing materials. Corrosion of plumbing is the largest source of lead in drinking water. 

Pesticide

In drinking water, nitrate may be an indicator of nearby agricultural or septic tank contamination. Excessive levels of nitrate in drinking can pose a particular health risk to infants.

PFAs

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large, complex group of synthetic chemicals that have been used in consumer products worldwide since the 1950s.

VOCs

Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are gases that are emitted into the air from products or processes. Some are harmful by themselves, including some that cause cancer. 

Heavy Metals

Heavy metals include: arsenic, antimony, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, selenium and many more. Heavy metals can contaminate private wells through groundwater movement and surface water seepage and run-off.

Micro-Plastics

Microplastics are present in both tap water and bottled water. A study showed that an average of 325 plastic particles were found in a liter of bottled water as compared to 5.5 plastic particles per liter of tap water

Nuclear Waste

Some groundwater is polluted throughout the nuclear weapons complex, often at levels greatly exceeding safe drinking water limits.
